The first step towards giving yourself a manicure is ensuring that you have assembled all the essential tools that are required in the process. Some of the things that you may require include a nail polish remover, you will need to have cotton swabs or pads, cuticle pusher, emery board, hand /nail moisturizer, base coat, nail polish and a clear topcoat.

Clear the old polish

When you have assembled all the required tools, the next step is to remove the previous nail polish. For the normal nail polish, it is recommended that you use a non-acetone nail polish but if yours is the type of nail polish that is stubborn and one that leaves some glitters, then use acetone polish remover. You can also remove instant polish remover if you so wish, but the main point here is to remove the previous polish before you begin the new process.

Trim and file your nails

If your nails have overgrown, you should get rid of them by the use of nail clippers. After that, you are to use your file to shape your nails into the perfect shape that you want. The shape can either be short and square or have smooth edges but they can also be the squared-off nails, but when it comes to this it depends on your preference.

Soak your nails

This can be considered as being an optional step. But if you want to have that feeling that you are doing it in a salon, then you can soak your nails in warm water for about 5 min. This step is meant to prepare your cuticles for the next step.

Push back your cuticles

This is also an optional step, but if they are too out of control you will have to push them a little bit back so that your nails can have a uniform nail surface.

Scrub to remove dead skin

You can either use your hand or body scrub or maybe prepare a simple scrub by mixing olive oil and sugar. This will ensure that any dead skin is completely eliminated.

Moisturize your skin

The next step is to make use of your favorite hand lotion or cream to ensure that your hand is properly moisturized. After doing this, wipe yourself properly to ensure that you remove any excess lotion from your nails.
